How Much Vitamin C Is In Ribena
Sugary drinks have been blamed for contributing to obesity and diabetes – hence next year's sugar tax which is due to be rolled out in April 2018.
But new research reveals sweetness isn't the only thing you have to worry about because a lot of popular fizzy and flat drinks are highly acidic too.
It turns out that Ribena is one of the worst acidity offenders, which can have a knock on effect on your teeth.
Acidic drinks can break down the protective enamel on your teeth and lead to cavities.
Experts measured the acidity of a range of popular drinks by testing their pH level.
The pH scale runs from 0 to 14 with the lowest numbers being the most acidic, 7 being neutral and the highest numbers the most alkaline.
Both Ribena Blackcurrant and Ribena Blackcurrant Light had a pH which ranged from 2.5 to 3.5 – and dentists warn against drinking anything more acidic than 5.5.
Dr Mervyn Druian, of the London Centre for Cosmetic Dentistry, told MailOnline that we need to see more sugar-free drinks on the market.
He said: "Tooth decay is actually on the increase and much of it is the result of the so called 'healthy drinks'.
"Most people know that sugary drinks are bad for the teeth, but even sparkling water – which we all think is healthy and safe – causes erosion and decalcification."
A Lucozade Ribena Suntory spokesperson told Daily Star Online: "Soft drinks containing real fruit juice often have a lower pH value because of the naturally occurring fruit acids.
"For example, each bottle of 500ml Ribena is packed full of 37 blackcurrants, which are naturally rich in ascorbic acid, commonly known as vitamin C.
"We are committed to playing our part in helping consumers to make positive choices when it comes to their soft drink consumption and market all of our products responsibly, which includes providing relevant nutritional information on our packaging."
During the research, commissioned by drinks manufacturer no&more, scientists tested a range of beverages to find out their acidity.
Here were the most acidic drinks:
Ribena Blackcurrant – pH 2.5-3.5
Ribena Light – pH 2.5-3.5
Pepsi – pH 2.5-3.5
Pepsi Max – pH 2.5-3.5
Coca-Cola – pH 2.5-3.5
Diet Coke – pH 2.5-3.5
